Barbara Read is a Principal Quality Engineer and an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer. Over her 35-year-plus career, she has held a variety of roles in software engineering, systems engineering, process improvement, and team leadership, culminating in her latest assignment. She is accustomed to being the only woman in the room, and now she often finds herself to be the oldest person in the room as well, presenting a new/old set of challenges for inclusion. Barbara finds that leveraging past experiences complement rather than compete with a willingness and ability to learn the next new thing, enabling productivity and longevity in the workplace. Barbara belongs to the Late Career & Retiree Affinity Group and is the FY26 Affinity Group Working Group Chair. She has spoken on DEI topics for workplace seminars, at past SWE conferences, most recently WE Local Wichita and WE Local Milwaukee, and on Diverse: a SWE podcast.
